If your default shot with the driver is a big slice, then you are leaving yards off the tee in the tank.

In other words, if you can develop the ability to hit a draw, then you will see a significant increase in distance off the tee.

The ability to hit a draw means you are getting most of the golf swing sequence correct, and you have more potential to increase your swing speed.

The reason why you may hit a big slice with the driver and not your other clubs is due to the fact that the driver has very little loft.

Loft and grooves create backspin, and backspin will help to offset side spin.

The lack of loft with the driver effectively exposes your swing flow more than your other clubs.

Two basic swings that cause a slice

The two basic swing patterns that cause a slice are the inside takeaway/over the top swing and the steep outside/inside swing.

The first swing type is the most common.

Many golfers pull the club inside on the takeaway because they feel it will help them attack the ball from the inside in the downswing.

Unfortunately, the inside takeaway takes them out of position, and they don’t have the ability to use their lower body to start the transition from back swing to down swing.

The result is the over the top move that causes the club to attack the ball from too far outside in the down swing.

This attack angle comes in too steep and makes it virtually impossible to release the club.

In fact, if you released the club properly with this attack angle, you would simply hit a smother pull.

Thus, the hands don’t release the club, and the club face stays open to the swing path.

Voila, you have a slice.

The other swing has a very steep outside takeaway, and it never gets re-routed back to the inside in the down swing.

The result is a similar shot shape to the over the top swing, but golfers with this swing shape tend to get more swing speed.

How to stop slicing your driver

Now that I’ve described the two basic swings that cause you to slice your driver, it’s time to provide a couple drills to deal with each issue.

I provide these drills in the video below taken from my Youtube channel.

Before I get to that, if you are reading this and haven’t signed up for my training, you are missing out!

I’ve put together a complete training that will help you improve your swing and gain more swing speed.

You can learn about that program here… how to hit longer tee shots.

Now let’s have a look at the video.
