If you want to hit longer drives, you need to increase your golf swing speed.

Here are my 5 tips to increase your golf swing speed.

Real quick… before I get to those I’ve put together a complete training program that you need to check out to learn exactly how to add significant speed to your golf swing.  Check it out here.

Tip #1 – Improve your golf swing sequence

Most golfers can squeeze quite a bit of swing speed out of their golf swing by making improvements to their golf swing.

The first thing they need to do is improve their swing sequencing.

In particular, the focus should be on the transition, as that is where many golfers faulter.

A poor transition often leads to an early release of the club, or a steep, over the top swing, and therefore, a slower swing speed.

Check out this video where I demonstrate how to improve the transition from the top of your golf swing.

Tip #2 – Identify your critical ball flight error and fix it

Next up, you need to identify the most significant problem with your golf swing and work to fix it.

This is known as the critical ball flight error.

This is what causes you to hit a slice, a hook, or lose swing speed.

The vast majority of golfers hit a slice with their driver.  Therefore, it makes sense to learn how to get rid of your slice with the driver.

This requires that you learn a bit about the swing plane and learn a couple drills to fix the error that causes the slice.

In my complete training program, I provide you with all the information you need to learn how to analyze and make improvements to your golf swing.

Tip #3 – Get stronger

Lat Pull Down

Many golfers will benefit significantly by getting stronger.

Consider this formula… Power = Force x Velocity.

Strength is the ability to produce force against resistance.

Strength training will help you improve your strength and maintain your strength for many years.

I’ve seen video of a man near 70 start legitimate strength training because as an avid softball player, he noticed he couldn’t hit the ball as far.

In his early 70s he was able to deadlift over 400 pounds, and this helped him regain some of the power he had lost.

Now, I am not saying you need to deadlift 400 pounds, as that requires major dedication.

However, the average 50 year old man who does not do any strength training can’t deadlift 200 pounds.

So, just imagine taking your deadlift from 150 pounds to 300 pounds.  You now have the ability to produce much more power.

Get stronger!

Tip #4 – Get more flexible

Hip Stretch

Yes, you should also get more flexible.  However, even though you may be over 50, this should not take priority over strength.

Unfortunately, this is what many golf fitness trainers focus on with their older clients.

With that said, if you combine legitimate strength training with a regular stretching program, and a little bit of yoga, you will be well on your way to generating more swing speed.

More flexibility allows you to create a greater range of motion.

That increased range of motion can translate into greater power as long as you make improvements to your swing and get stronger.

Final tip to increase your golf swing speed

My last tip to help you generate more clubhead speed is to get faster.

Keep in mind, I am not referring to overspeed training here.

In my view, overspeed training (swinging the driver, or a speed stick device as fast as you can for a number of swings) can create more wear and tear on the body.

The golf swing is NOT a natural human movement pattern.

Professional golfers are prone to all sorts of injuries due to overuse… wrist, shoulder, elbow, back and hips.

Given that, overspeed training should be absolutely the lowest priority to get a few more yards off the tee.

Instead, I am referring to simply learning how to move the body faster doing more natural movements such as sprints and some plyometric exercises.

Just be sure that you prepare the body with a good warm up and light stretching before you engage in that type of exercise.

So now you have five general tips to increase your clubhead speed.

Again, if you haven’t done so, consider checking out my program to help you hit longer drives.

Now get to work!
